Don't Brag About Where You Are

Most of my tips on this blog are helpful in regards to how you should act, or pack, or save money when traveling for business.  However, I feel I must post this as a matter of safety.

When you are traveling for business, or pleasure for that matter, be aware of what you are posting online.  We live in a social-media-crazy world in which everyone wants everyone else to know exactly what they are doing this very second and where they are located in the world.

While this is great and I understand wanting to rub your friends and coworkers noses in the fact that you are on a business trip in paradise, consider the consequences.  What would happen if a burglar were to come across your Facebook page, or Twitter account and see you just posted a picture and tagged yourself in a location 800 miles away?  Even worse, what if you are in a different time zone when you post this, and your spouse and children are asleep at your home?

I know, you say, my Facebook account is restricted to only my friends who can see my posts.  Well, what if one of your friends comments on your post?  Then, all of their friends can see what they posted on your timeline.  Next, one of their friends likes your friend's comment on your post.  Now, all of that third person's friends can see your "restricted" post.  Nothing you put online is secure!

The chances that a thief will come in the night and steal all your possessions and harm your family are indeed very little, but, is that a chance you are willing to take just to make a few people jealous?

Instead, wait until you get home.  Take as many pictures as you like, fill up a whole SD card, but wait to share them online when you are safe and sound at your home.  Also, make sure when you are sharing the pictures, you plainly state you are home and had a great trip.
